A Bradford man admitted to taking a vehicle and damaging it at Harrogate Magistrates Court today (March 6).

Ishmael Khan, of Wightman Street, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated vehicle taking and causing damage under £5,000.

Mel Ibbotson, prosecuting, told the court the car belonged to a family member’s partner.

The court heard Khan was staying with the family member and his partner in Harrogate last August. He was 17 at the time, but his mother was on holiday and she did not want him to be home alone.

On August 18, the car owner was notified by activity on her doorbell as Khan, now 18, walked through the garden.

Ms Ibbotson said a video of Khan driving the vehicle was later shared on Snapchat.

Khan then crashed the car into a lamppost, the court heard, which caused around £3,000 worth of damage to the vehicle.

Ms Ibbotson added Khan made a full admission to police and told officers he “drove the car round the block a few times”.

He told police he was alone in the car and was not under the influence of any substances.

Khan, who was not legally represented in court, confirmed what the prosecution said was true.

The case was adjourned whilst a pre-sentenced report is prepared.

Khan will return to Harrogate Magistrates Court on April 11.
