A man has been summoned to appear in court after graffiti was painted on Fountains Abbey.
Graffiti was painted on the abbey and St Mary’s Church, which is inside the Studley Royal deer park, on the evening of February 16 this year.
In a statement today (December 18), North Yorkshire Police said a man had been issued with a postal requisition to appear in court to face two charges of “destroy or damage an ancient protected monument”.
The man will appear at Harrogate Magistrate’s Court on January 15, 2026.
The National Trust site near Ripon attracts more than 400,000 visitors a year and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At the time, a spokesperson for the trust told the Stray Ferret that the graffiti was the worst case of vandalism it had ever seen at Fountains Abbey.
