The Met Office forecast

An artisan market due to take place in Knaresborough this weekend has been cancelled due to forecasted high winds.

Storm Amy is expected to sweep across the northern part of the United Kingdom tomorrow.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for high winds is in force locally from 3pm tomorrow (October 3) until 11.59pm on Saturday.

Gusts of up to 48mph are predicted in Knaresborough, with wind strength peaking at about midday Saturday.

Little Bird Markets was due to hold one of its regular artisan markets in Knaresborough on Saturday but in a social media post today it said:

Due to the strong wind gusts this weekend, unfortunately, we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel Saturday's Artisan Market at Knaresborough.

This is not a decision we take lightly, as this impacts our traders' businesses. However, safety must always come first for our customers, traders, and staff.

Thank you for understanding and all your support.

We will be heading back to Knaresborough on Saturday, 1 November, we look forward to welcoming you all.

Knaresborough’s exposure to high winds is one of the reasons why the town council is bidding to take control of the weekly Wednesday market.

The market currently benefits from reinforced steel frames designed to withstand winds, but North Yorkshire Council wants to implement a new model whereby traders set up their own stalls.

The move would save the council money because it would no longer be responsible for the loss-making set-up service.

But traders would have to provide their own lightweight gazebo stalls, which are less able to withstand wind.

If the town council's bid to run the market succeeds, it would be able to retain the steel frames.
