Mayor's appeal provides boost for Ripon charities
Two Ripon charities will be able to extend the services they provide, after sharing almost £7,000 raised through the mayor's appeal.
Representatives from Dementia Forward and Ripon Walled Garden received their respective cheques for £3,951 and £3,000 from the Mayor of Ripon, Councillor Sid Hawke.
The money was donted by members of the public at a number of fundraising events throughout the year, culminating in Santa's Musical Sleigh tour, which visited streets around the city and in neighbouring villages during the festive season.
Cllr Hawke, who was joined by mayoress Linda Hawke, to make the presentations in the Mayor's Parlour at Ripon Town Hall, said:
People gave very generously and I would like to thank fellow councillors Barbara Brodigan, Chris Hardisty and former mayor Eamon Parkin, for the support that they gave to the appeal.
Keith Townson, who works as a volunteer on the Dementia Forward helpline, said:
We will ,be using the funds to continue supporting the families of Ripon and throughout North Yorkshire who are affected by dementia
The charity is under great pressure with a growing number of people using the services that it provides.
We are recognised as a vital source of information, advice and support, as well as being a strong advocate for people living with dementia and we adopt a 'local for local' approach, using the resource of local community and partnership working to its full.
The Walled Garden is operated by Ripon Community Link and provides work-based opportunies designed to help people with learning disabilities to reach their full potential and live as independently as possible.
Head of member services David Foster, told the Stray Ferret:
We rely on the generosity of local people, businesses, individuals and groups to enable us to offer day service opportunities for our members and the £3,000 we have recieved from the Mayor's Appeal will be put to good use in supporting our actvities and helping us to buy new equipment.
