Cllr Matt Walker, who took the photo of the vandalised toilet.

A Knaresborough councillor has criticised “mindless vandals” who have cause the closure of public toilets.

Cllr Matt Walker, a Liberal Democrat who represents Knaresborough West on North Yorkshire Council, said he was “deeply disappointed and disgusted to report that Knaresborough's public toilets have seen a sharp rise in vandalism and anti-social behaviour recently”.

His comments came after a council worker told him: “Every night one or both toilets have been subject to a high level of vandalism."

They also said the toilets have been left “in a complete mess with roll after roll of toilet roll being soaked and chucked all over the place”.

Cllr Walker posted on social media the incidents have been reported to the police, and CCTV evidence is being reviewed.

    He added:

I’m hopeful the mindless vandals will be caught soon.

As a result, the bus station toilets are being temporarily closed and all public conveniences in Knaresborough will now close at 6pm.

This is hugely disappointing. These facilities are there for everyone, and a small minority are putting their future at risk through this unacceptable behaviour.
