North Yorkshire Council has said more roadworks will be required on Harrogate’s Whinney Lane.
The Stray Ferret last week reported nearby resident Mike Newall’s frustration over a section of the road being dug up just days after a resurfacing scheme.
The recent work, which took place from December 3 to 5, came just days after Whinney Lane reopened on November 29 following resurfacing work.
Mr Newall, who described the situation as a “travesty”, last week said:
I had a joke with my mate that when Whinney Lane was finally completed – after the pointless replacement and wasting of kerbstones – and resurfaced, it would be dug up within weeks.
[It took] three days! Yes, Openreach today (December 3) dug a large trench through the brand-new tarmac right across Whinney Lane.
The Stray Ferret last week asked North Yorkshire Council why it would permit work that requires a section of road to be dug up so soon after a resurfacing scheme.
The council’s assistant director for highways and transport, Barrie Mason, yesterday said:
We carried out temporary resurfacing of Whinney Lane from November 25 to 29 in order that planning obligations for the nearby Stonebridge Homes development were complied with. Lining of the road will be completed this week.
Further work will be required in relation to junctions and utility services as part of planning consents.
We will continue to discuss ways of limiting disruption and increasing efficiency with developers where possible, but additional measures will be necessary while the construction process is continuing.
When Mr Newall approached Openreach at the time, a contractor said the work was being carried out to “install a conduit for the 5G upgrade to the mast at the top of the lane”.
The road to the west of Harrogate is a hotspot for housing developments, but Mr Newall has said he fears the resurfaced road will “break up” over the winter months.
