A senior councillor has said he expects more fines to be issued for littering and fly-tipping across North Yorkshire amid plans for stronger enforcement.

At a full council meeting in Northallerton, Greg White, executive councillor for managing our environment on North Yorkshire Council, was asked how successful the council’s litter enforcement policy had been.

Cllr Angus Thompson, a Conservative who represents North Richmondshire, described the issue of littering as an ongoing problem in the county.

He added that nationally there were 126,493 fines for litter and fly-tipping in the last year. Cllr Thompson asked to what extend the council’s policy had been successful.

In response, Cllr White said in the last 12 months 37 fixed penalty notices had been issued for littering in North Yorkshire, while 43 had been imposed for fly-tipping.

However, he added that he expected those figures to increase due to plans for a stronger enforcement team at the council.

He said:

We are also putting together a stronger enforcement team, so I would expect those numbers to increase going forward.

With fly-tipping, if we get the evidence, we go straight to the courts. If the evidence is there, the courts in general do convict. As well as fines, they also have costs.

Cllr White added that the biggest fine imposed this year in North Yorkshire was £1,175.

Last year, a man from Northumberland was fined £461 for fly-tipping in Cattal in the Harrogate district. The fine followed an investigation by North Yorkshire Council’s environmental protection team.
