The owner of Orbit Strength in Ripon has submitted plans to open a new gym in Melmerby.
Orbit currently operates gyms at Dallamires Close in Ripon and at Dove Way in Kirkbymoorside
Owner Jack Duffy has now applied to North Yorkshire Council to open a third facility in a unit previously used for car storage at the Barker Business Park, also known as Melmerby Industrial Estate.
About 30 businesses are based on the park, which is four miles from Ripon and close to the A1(M).
Mr Duffy's planning statement says the proposed gym would cater for up to 250 members and include functional fitness equipment, cardio machines, resistance machines and a free weight area, with multiple squat racks.
It adds the business “will operate on a strictly members-only basis, with no casual entry” and “no instructor-led classes are proposed”.
The proposed opening times are from 6.30am to 9.30pm Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm on Saturday and 8.30am to 3pm on Sunday.
The statement says “24-hour operation is not proposed, nor intended in the future” and “the facility will be fully staffed at all times during opening hours”.
The gym would operate in a 420 square metre building on the business park, which is four miles from Ripon and close to the A1.
The statement concludes:
Overall, the proposal presents an appropriate use that will not lead to any adverse impact on the surrounding area. The proposal is in line with local and national planning policy and guidance. The proposal will deliver significant social and economic benefits to the applicants and the local community, while not resulting in any detrimental harm to the surrounding area, neighbouring occupiers and uses or the town centre.
North Yorkshire Council will decide whether to permit the development.
