Harrogate District Hospital has marked a significant milestone in the construction of a new day case surgery and imaging centre.
The two-storey building, which is being built by construction firm Morgan Sindall, will provide modern surgical and imaging services.
It will replace the old therapy services building that had to be demolished because it was riddled with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), also known as 'crumbly concrete'.
The new building will house two operating theatres, two procedure rooms, a day case ward, and an imaging department.
The imaging facilities will feature two MRI scanners, two CT scanners, three x-ray rooms, seven ultrasound scanners, bone density (Dexa) scanning, and fluoroscopy, which provides real-time imaging of tissue and organs.
Hospital staff, construction partners and NHS representatives gathered to celebrate the completion of the building’s structural steel framework.
They were then given the opportunity to sign the building’s steel framework to recognise the progress made to date.
The construction is part of a £50 million investment funded by Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) and NHS England. The trust today said it has secured the latest tranche of funding - £14 million – approximately half of which will be used to support the new day-case centre.
The other half will be used to remove RAAC across the site.
The next stage will see floors laid and roofing and cladding installed.
Sarah Armstrong, chair of the trust, said:
It has been wonderful to take part in the steel signing, which recognises the progress that has been made in such a short period of time – it was only in February that the ground was broken.
The new facility will allow us to carry out more operations and more scans, which will help us to reduce waiting times. I cannot wait until the centre opens next year to see the positive impact and the benefits it will bring for our patients.
This is one of the biggest investments our trust has ever made, and it is key to ensuring that we can deliver the highest quality healthcare that our community expects in the future.
Ben Hall, Yorkshire area director at Morgan Sindall, said:
We are proud to be working in partnership with Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust to bring this state-of-the-art centre to life.
The building is due to be operational by autumn 2026.
