Plans have been approved to open a new sandwich shop in Harrogate.
SFG Darlington Ltd submitted the proposal to North Yorkshire Council to convert a retail unit on Commercial Street into a sandwich shop.
According to the plans, the shop would open in the former Rafi’s Spicebox unit which closed on June 27 this year.
North Yorkshire Council approved the plan on Wednesday (September 30).
A planning statement said the business would primarily operate as a sandwich shop/deli and open from 10am to 3pm, Tuesday to Thursday, and 10am to 8pm on Friday and Saturdays.
The menu would include items such as club sandwiches, roast beef sandwiches, salads, scotch eggs and sausage rolls, as well as hot food items including fried chicken, burgers and breakfast baps.
Four to five tables for customers are also included in the plans. However, the business expects most of the food to be bought and taken off site.
The report adds:
The applicant advises that the business would operate in a similar manner to a deli or café, rather than a traditional hot food takeaway, with a focus on the sale of cold sandwiches, snacks and beverages.
The move comes as the owners of Rafi’s Spicebox announced its closure in June after 12 years in Harrogate.
Kevin Fernandez, director of the business, announced in a Facebook post that he had taken the “incredibly tough decision” to protect the future of the firm.
He said:
The challenging retail environment and ever-increasing financial pressure have ultimately made it impossible for us to continue trading from this site.
In order to ensure that we can continue with my mother, Rafi’s, mission to make simple, fresh and handmade Indian food accessible to everyone, we must make incredibly tough decisions now to preserve the future of our beloved family business.
