A free parking initiative launched by business support organisation Ripon BID, caused confusion to motorists, because ticket machines that should have had covers put in place by North Yorkshire Council last Saturday (December 21) were still accepting payments.
The error by the authority, which operates the city's pay and display car parks, brought a number of posts on social media and BID manager Lilla Bathurst, in a post on Facebook, said:
We have spoken this morning to North Yorkshire Council, who have apologised for their failings regarding the free parking last Saturday.
Discussions regarding payment are ongoing (and the council) have assured us that for the next free parking on Saturday (December 28) all ticket machines will be covered over.
The initiative is being run in partnership with Booths Country Supermarket and Councillor Andrew Williams, who has provided funding from the locality monies that he receives as an elected member of North Yorkshire Council.
On Saturday (December 28) parking will be free of charge all day at the following city car parks: Booths (Marshall Way) Ripon Market Square, The Arcade (near Sainsbury's) Cathedral Car Park, Victoria Grove, St Marygate and Blossomgate.
