North Yorkshire mayor appoints new deputy and climate change lead
The Mayor of York and North Yorkshire has appointed a new deputy mayor and a portfolio holder for climate change.
Cllr Claire Douglas, Labour leader of City of York Council, will take up the deputy mayor position replacing Cllr Peter Kilbane.
The role will mean Cllr Douglas will step in for Mayor David Skaith when he is not available.
Cllr Kilbane stood down as deputy leader of City of York Council, meaning he will no longer be able to sit in on combined authority meetings.
Mr Skaith announced the new appointments at an annual meeting of York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority on Friday (June 5).
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Douglas said she was looking forward to “bringing all the benefits of devolution to the people that we serve”.
Meanwhile, Mr Skaith has also appointed Cllr Jenny Kent, a Labour councillor who represents Holgate on City of York Council , to become the newly created portfolio holder for environment and climate change on the combined authority.
The Labour mayor said Cllr Kent, who is also York council’s executive member for environment and climate emergency, will help to “coordinate our response to the climate emergency and making progress towards becoming the first carbon negative region in England”.
Cllr Kent said:
There are so many opportunities in North Yorkshire and York for the environment and sustainability. It is going to be an exciting year ahead.
