A selection of paintings focussed on north east landscapes and coastlines will go on sale in Ripon this month.

The John Nicholson Fine Art Retirement Auction at Elstob Auctioneers, marking the retirement of fine art dealer John Nicholson, will feature more than 100 pieces – some from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, others contemporary.

Around 40 of the 116 lots depict views of the Yorkshire coast, Northumberland, County Durham, as well as pictures of the Lake District and Scottish Highlands.

An oil painting by Ralph Hedley (1848–1913) will lead the sale. Hedley was also a member of Staithes Group – a group of artists who captured scenes of the Yorkshire coast, inspired by impressionist techniques.

Titled 'Collective Gravel', Hedley’s oil on board depicts a man with a horse and cart, shovelling gravel from a riverbank, and carries an estimated price of £1,500 to £2,000.

David Elstob, director of Elstob Auctioneers, said:

We are honoured to be hosting the retirement sale of John Nicholson Fine Art – a well-known and respected name in the region. This is a significant and appealing collection, with an especially strong offering for buyers interested in the landscapes, coastlines and artistic heritage of the North East.

A collection of watercolours by Thomas Swift Hutton (1865–1935), known for depictions of Yorkshire and North East coastlines, will also be on sale.

These include 'St George's Bay, Tynemouth'; 'Bathing Pool'; 'Whitley Bay' and 'Northumberland Coast'.

By the age of 27, Hutton’s watercolours had been displayed in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Dudley Gallery in London.

Ten works by landscape artist John Falconer Slater (1857-1937) will also be included in the sale, with estimated prices ranging from £600 to £1,000.

His paintings 'Cart on a Coastal Path', 'The Upper Tyne' and 'On the Way Home' will be on sale.

Some of his paintings are now held by the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle and the National Maritime Museum.

John Nicholson added:

Elstob Auctioneers is one of the leading auction houses in the north of England and has built a strong reputation for its expertise in the field of painting. Their knowledge, professionalism and regional reach made them the ideal choice to handle this important sale as I retire from the business.

The auction will take place at 2pm on August 28 but the sale is currently live to view.

Bids can be made in person by leaving a commission bid, over the phone or online.
