Northern Powergrid has issued an update after a blackout at traffic lights on Harrogate’s Leeds Road has caused chaos for drivers.
Lights at the junction with M&S were out on all four arms of the crossroads after a power outage on Wednesday (January 14).
The A61 Leeds Road carries around 30,000 drivers a day, many of them coming into Harrogate from Leeds and Bradford.
Temporary lights have been in place at the junction since last week, but drivers have still faced long queues during rush hour.
In a statement issued to the Stray Ferret today (January 19), Northern Powergrid said it is planning to repair the fault at the lights this week.
A spokesperson for the company said:
We’re aware of a fault on the traffic lights at the Leeds Road crossroad in Harrogate. We are planning excavation work this week to repair the faulty service.
Should the fault continue, we have contingency plans in place to connect a generator to power the lights and we’re arranging suitable parking arrangements for the generator, should this be required.
It comes as motorists have told the Stray Ferret that traffic heading into town during rush hour has queued as far as Almsford Bank.
According to a North Yorkshire Council post on Facebook last week, the lights are manually controlled at peak times to minimise delay.
