A woman sentenced to jail for stealing from an elderly person with dementia has launched a foul-mouthed rant at people with “miserable lives” in Harrogate while she evades capture.

Maira Liu, 51, stole a cherished £3,000 gold watch from a woman under her care at Granby Nursing Home in Harrogate in 2019.

Liu was arrested but left the country before the case came to court.

She was sentenced to 18 months in jail and fined almost £4,000 in her absence at York Crown Court last week.

The Stray Ferret and other media publications reported on the sentencing. You can read our report here.

Days later, Liu subsequently took to Facebook to says she would “like to thank some acquaintances from Harrogate who asked information about me” because they are “great gossips”.

Liu added:

Don't worry, I'm in Italy, and I'm free. I do a job that satisfies me a lot, I'm a maitre, and I travel around Italy because I can choose where to work so for the future I would kindly ask you to think about your f****** miserable life, if you have one.

After more foul-mouhed abuse, she signed off ‘Trump X Ever’ and urged anyone seeking more information to contact her directly.

The Stray Ferret sent her a direct message asking why she did not turn up in court.

She replied to deny stealing and added:

I will turn to the International Court of Human Rights and I will ask for damages, for all the slander and stress you are causing me.

I gotta lot of disease, this make me so stressed for all the slander and stress you are causing me. Of course you have nothing better to do, given that there is a genocide taking place, violence everywhere in England, and you write lies about me.

Liu was thought to be in Italy but claimed in her response to us she was in Australia.

A warrant for her arrest, which was issued in February 2023, remains active.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said

It is common practice for trials and sentencing to proceed even in the defendant’s absence.

We are liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service and the courts regarding the sentence that has been imposed.
