Owner of Harrogate's Cairn Hotel falls into administration
The company that owns Harrogate’s historic Cairn Hotel has gone into administration, it has been announced.
East Kilbride-based Strathmore Hotels appointed administrators from Interpath on Tuesday (August 11) following “sustained financial difficulties”.
The 135-bedroom Cairn, which opened in 1890, is one of eight hotels owned and operated by Strathmore, six of which are in Scotland, and the other in the Lake District.
All eight hotels will continue to trade while the administrators review the options available to them, and in the meantime, all the company’s 410 employees will be retained by the administrators.
According to Interpath, Strathmore had been under “sustained creditor pressure for a number of months”. A winding-up petition was lodged in the Scottish courts last month on behalf of HMRC.
Alistair McAlinden, joint administrator and head of Interpath in Scotland, said:
The hospitality sector has faced a number of significant challenges in recent years, including rising operating costs, inflationary pressures, workforce shortages and changing consumer spending patterns. Unfortunately, Strathmore Hotels has not been immune to these headwinds and has also experienced sustained financial difficulties, resulting in the appointment of the joint administrators.
Our immediate priority is to ensure continuity across the business. We recognise that this news may be concerning for employees, customers, and suppliers. However, we would like to reassure all stakeholders that it is very much business as usual across the portfolio, and we encourage guests to continue visiting the hotels as normal while we explore the best possible outcome for the business.
Interpath said customer queries should be directed to Strathmore Hotels in the usual manner.
The Stray Ferret contacted Strathmore Hotels for comment but was referred to the administrator.
