Pateley Bridge café under new ownership
A well-known tearoom in Pateley Bridge has changed ownership.
Stephen Stacey and Jemima Robinson, who moved to the area in October 2022, have taken over Wildings Riverside Tearoom and Terrace, on Nidd Walk.
The couple told the Stray Ferret they each had a “decade of experience in hospitality” and have spent the last year-and-a-half exploring potential ventures.
Stephen said they are “suited to the industry” and “enjoy being on their feet”, adding:
We met in a fine dining establishment, so opening our own place just feels right.
He told the Stray Ferret the café, which will be the couple’s first venture, will focus on “speciality, seasonality and locality”.
People can expect “elevated” traditional brunch dishes, including miso mushrooms on toast or trout benedict.
Jemima added:
We want to raise the bar for sustainability. For example, we won’t be using avocados for that reason, so we think we’ll have a courgette smash on toast instead.
The couple also said they want to create a British-centric menu with a focus on local produce.
Trout will come from the Nidd Trout Farm, meat from a supplier in Kirkby Malzeard and preserves from a York-based manufacturer.
There will also be takeaway options including sandwiches, salads, burgers and ice cream, as well as tea and coffee.
The couple are spending around £10,000 on refurbishments at the site, which include new flooring and furniture, decorating and new kitchen equipment.
The cafe will begin as a “daytime operation”, they said, adding they hope to expand opening times to offer supper clubs, wine evenings and more.
Stephen told the Stray Ferret:
We’re very excited now and can’t wait for people to visit.
The new Wildings Riverside Café will open Wednesday to Sunday, from 8.30am to 4.30pm.
Its official opening day is June 22.
