This amazing photo was taken in Harrogate by reader Steve Gritter. It shows a fallstreak cloud – a rare phenomenon that not many people see twice.
A fallstreak cloud, also known as a 'hole punch cloud', looks like a thicker cloud concentrated in a gap in thinner cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds. These formations occur when supercooled water droplets in the cloud, which are below freezing but not yet frozen, are disturbed – often by a passing aircraft – causing them to freeze and fall, creating a distinctive hole.
