A plan for a new memorial and remembrance garden near Green Hammerton has been approved.
North Yorkshire Council has approved the proposal, which was submitted by the CDS Group, a company that specialises in the development of cemeteries and crematoria.
The move will see open land and a disused paddock on Water Slack Lane converted into a landscaped memorial site.
The site will include areas for ash scattering, ash interment and tree planting for memorialisation, alongside natural landscaping designed to blend in with the surrounding countryside.
According to the plans, ash interment plots will be located in the south-east and north-west of the site, while areas for ash scattering and memorial trees will sit in central, north-eastern and south-western parts.
Each interment plot will measure around 0.3 metres by 0.3 metres, with space for an estimated 13,760 plots in total.
The development will also include an access road and car park. Grass-cut pedestrian pathways will stretch across the site to connect the different memorial areas.
Other features include a pond near the centre of the site which will be surrounded by nature. A circular grassed area with a pergola will sit to the south of the pond, providing a sheltered place for visitors.
Meanwhile, the proposal received no objections and was supported by the local parish council.
The need for new memorial space has been highlighted by increasing pressure on existing facilities in the Harrogate district which are approaching or exceeding capacity.
Since the proposed site lies within a 20 mile radius of several crematoria, it is expected to serve communities across the Harrogate district and beyond, providing a dedicated location for ash scattering and interment.
Developers say the garden will maintain the open character of the countryside while offering a peaceful setting for remembrance and reflection.
Work will begin within the next three years.
