Plans to create a self-storage yard in a former Harrogate timber yard have been approved.

North Yorkshire Council approved the change of use to allow a facility consisting of shipping containers and recreational vehicle parking.

The site will be located in the former Marsland Timber yard on Grey Hill Road, just off Ripon Road.

The applicant is Harrogate Storage Solutions, a company which has two existing storage sites, one in Killinghall and the other on Mornington Terrace.

The site was previously used for storage of timber building materials on hardstanding and in a warehouse building. The yard ceased trading in August.

According to the plans, there will be no new structural build form and the hardstanding will remain unchanged. The shipping containers will be semi-permanent structures.

There will be parking areas for recreational vehicles such as motorhomes and caravans with the storage containers around the perimeter of the site.

In a planning statement, Harrogate Storage Solutions said:

We are seeing the need for flexible storage solutions to increase exponentially, and we cannot meet the current demand and evolving needs of individuals and businesses for secure and economical facilities despite the enquiries each week we are receiving.

We believe that the proposed site in Harrogate will be able to meet the growing demand and offer the type of storage that will meet the requirements we are repeatedly being asked for based on the enquiries we are receiving and based on the original needs of current tenants.

The statement added:

As the Harrogate housing market expands land that used to be able to offer workshops and vehicle/caravan/motorhome storage has diminished greatly.

Modern homes are not being built with storage capabilities that the housing market used to accommodate and are frequently not providing attic space or garages, and this is pushing homeowners to seek alternative spaces to keep their items.

We could offer them this in a suitable location within a secure environment at a price that is affordable to them.
