A village church near Knaresborough has submitted plans to install 40 solar panels on its roof.
St Mary the Virgin Church, in Goldsborough has applied to North Yorkshire Council for the solar panels and also to install three air source heat pumps.
Plans state that the grade one listed building, which dates back to the 13th century but was restored in 1750 and 1859, is seeking to make the changes “in order to future-proof the church".
The panels would be installed on the south-facing roof slope, hidden from roadside view, while the three heat pumps would sit underneath the east window.
A design and heritage statement has been provided by Ilkley firm Overton Architects on behalf of the church.
Plans to install solar panels on the roof of St Mary the Virgin Church, Goldsborough
It said:
The clear objective of this proposal is to provide a sustainable future not only for the church, but for the local community.
These additions will reduce the building’s carbon footprint significantly – and allow the church to contribute to the Church of England’s route map to net zero carbon by 2030.
The proposals have been carefully considered to minimise or avoid harm to historic fabric and maintain legibility and appreciation of the building, and to be as visually unobtrusive as possible.
The whole proposal has been designed to be fully reversible, minimise harm to the heritage asset, and carefully weigh this against the public benefit of the future sustainability of the church.
The council will decide whether to approve the plans after a public consultation.
