North Yorkshire Police is appealing for witnesses to a plane crash that happened near Masham early yesterday afternoon.
Police say that a cordon remains in place today around the light aircraft while investigations continue.
In a statement today, North Yorkshire Police said:
At 12.21pm yesterday (Wednesday, February 18), we received a report that a light aircraft had crashed within the grounds of the Himalayan Garden and Sculpture Park, which was closed to the public at the time of the incident.
Emergency services responded immediately. On arrival, they located a single occupant, a man in his 20s inside the aircraft. The man remains in hospital in a serious condition. No-one else is believed to have been on board the aircraft.
Officers are now working alongside the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB), which attended the scene today and launched its own investigation.
North Yorkshire Police is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who saw the aircraft prior to the incident, to come forward.
Anyone with footage of the incident – including mobile phone or dashcam footage of the aircraft while airborne – is asked not to share it on social media, but to contact North Yorkshire Police directly instead.
Information can be given via email to matthew.wilkinson@northyorkshire.police.uk or by phoning North Yorkshire Police on 101, and asking for Matthew Wilkinson.
