North Yorkshire Police has launched an investigation after its newly installed speed camera was damaged on its first day of use.

The force yesterday announced the county’s first ever fixed speed camera would be erected on the A64 Sherburn High Street as part of a three-month trial to help slow down motorists and reduce the number of serious and fatal collisions in Sherburn.

However, the speed camera was damaged at around 2am this morning (July 1) – just hours into its first day of the trial.

Police said work has been carried out to make the lamppost and exposed electricity cable safe, and officers believe the speed camera was damaged deliberately.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Today’s statement added:

It is disappointing to see that something intended to help keep the village safe and protect members of the public has been targeted by vandals.

Anyone who has any information about those responsible including anyone who witnessed it or has footage from a dashcam or doorbell camera is asked to get in touch.

Please email Paul.O'Neill@northyorkshire.police.uk with any information. Or call 101 and pass information for incident number 12250119469.

If you prefer to remain anonymous you can pass information to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Work to re-install the speed camera at an alternate location in Sherburn is ongoing.
