Police in Boroughbridge are investigating about 15 incidences of criminal damage consisting of spray-painted St George’s crosses.
North Yorkshire Police said in a statement today (August 27) the outbreak is believed to have occurred at about 10.30pm on Friday last week.
The statement said the crosses were “daubed on property including the walls of private homes and businesses, lampposts, private garden walls and fences, an electricity substation and an estate agent’s for sale board”.
The graffiti also included “some offensive language”.
It added:
To be clear, this is criminal damage caused to private property, resulting in unnecessary expense and inconvenience for local people.
Extensive enquiries have been undertaken to help identify the suspects and the investigation is continuing.
Officers urged anyone with any information who has not yet spoken to call 101, and pass information for reference number 12250158809.
Councillor Robert Windass, a Conservative who represents Boroughbridge and Claro, said:
Boroughbridge has welcomed people from eastern Europe and beyond and can well do without people like this. I hope the police are successful in finding the culprits.
