Police have launched an appeal after a pony and trap race brought chaos to a major local road.

North Yorkshire Police said in a statement today it was alerted to reports of “a number of vehicles being involved in a pony and trap race meet” on the A168 Dishforth bypass at 8am on Saturday (March 15).

The statement added:

This resulted in vehicles driving on both sides of the road and causing other road users to take action to avoid a collision, including mounting the grass verge.

As part of the ongoing investigation, we are requesting dashcam footage that may cover the incident or any other information.

A police spokesman said the incident happened "near Dishforth".

Pony and trap racing involves horses pulling a cart and driver behind them and is not illegal on roads.

Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Barber last year called for races to be banned if organisers do not have a licence after a spate of races in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

Police urged anyone with information on the Dishforth bypass incident to email Pierre.Olesqui@northyorkshire.police.uk or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference number 12250046212.
