Popular Harrogate takeaway closes after sale falls through
A top-rated Harrogate takeaway has announced its closure, 18 months after the owner put the business up for sale.
In an emotional Facebook post Daniel Bell, owner of Thug Sandwich on Albert Street, said the shop was forced to close its doors after the sale of the business fell through.
In March 2025, Mr Bell said running the sandwich shop was “no longer sustainable for me”, due to the amount of time it took up.
The formally trained chef had hoped Thug Sandwich would carry on as a business under new ownership.
Thug Sandwich started trading in September 2018 and the takeaway quickly established itself as favourite with central Harrogate’s lunchtime crowd.
In 2022, the man behind Rate My Takeaway, Danny Malin, visited – and gave it full marks, calling it the “number one takeaway”.
In the social media post, made on September 21, Mr Bell said:
For the past few months, we’ve been doing everything we could to keep Thug going while we worked towards a sale and a new chapter for the business. Unfortunately, that sale has now fallen through and, after a lot of thought, it means it’s time to close our doors.
Thank you to every person who came through the door, brought a mate, queued in the rain, ordered the usual, shouted us out, or simply gave us a chance over the years. And a huge thank you to every member of staff who has been part of Thug. You made it a pleasure to turn up to work every day and helped shape the character of Thug Sandwich. We could never have done it without you.
A closing date has not been confirmed, and the Stray Ferret has reached out to Thug Sandwich for further details.
However, when we went to the shop just after 10am on September 22 it was closed, despite it normally being open at this time, and a food delivery was sitting outside the door.
