The rainbow flag is flying from Ripon Town Hall today (May 17) to show support for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia.
The rainbow flag reflects the diversity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community.
It was hung outside the town hall for the first time last year to mark the day, which always falls on May 17 to commemorate the date when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1990.
Ripon City Council posted on its Facebook page that the flag had returned this year at the request of North Yorkshire Council.
It said:
North Yorkshire Council, who currently own the building, have asked for it to be flown alongside others across the county in support of those persecuted for their sexual orientation. The union flag will return to its usual position on the flagpole tomorrow.
North Yorkshire Council is in the process of transferring ownership of the town hall to Ripon City Council.
