Ripon’s leisure centre will finally reopen fully next month following major programmes of refurbishment and ground stabilisation.
Work at the Jack Laugher Centre has been ongoing for more than two years. It started in June 2023, when contractors were called in to pump huge quantities of grout into underground voids that had opened up beneath the centre.
Parts of Ripon are particularly susceptible to sinkholes due to a layer of gypsum – a soft, water-soluble rock – lying close to the surface.
Ground stabilisation works were completed in September 2024, and the gym facilities were reopened in February this year.
Since then, the ground floor of the centre has been refurbished, including the sports hall, studios and changing rooms.
In a social media post, North Yorkshire Council said the centre would fully reopen on Monday, September 8.
It added:
Following extensive work at the site, the gym has been fully operational since July 1, and the centre will now launch an extensive class timetable, immersive cycling studio, sports hall and outdoor sports pitches.
Members have been contacted directly with further information about the reopening and with the chance to attend taster days on September 4 and 5.
