Readers’ Letters is a free weekly column giving you the chance to have your say on issues affecting the Harrogate district. It is an opinion column and does not reflect the views of the Stray Ferret. Send your views to letters@thestrayferret.co.uk.
The following comments were left under an opinion article about estate agents referring to the “favoured south side of Harrogate”.
This bias dates back even 40-50 years ago and felt stupid then. It was said to us when we moved up from the Midlands as if it was an obvious fact. It meant nothing to us then, it wasn't explained and struck me as a stupid assumption then and now. The beauty of the northern edges, with access to the Nidd and the Dales, were never given a thought. We were told 'as young professionals', not asked our preferences.

What about us poor devils who live in the middle? No one bothers to like or dislike us.

I have lived in many different areas of the country for varying periods of time for over eighty years and remember urban ghettoing by estate agents at all of them. You visit the town, get to know it a little and decide where you want to live. I've always taken estate agent speak with a large pinch of salt.
