These comments were left on a recent article about how a university is carrying out a study into implementing fixed speed cameras in North Yorkshire.
Fixed speed cameras are absolutely essential and long overdue. Credit to the Chief Constable for promoting them in North Yorkshire.
Malcolm Margolis
This obsession with speed - it is not the only cause of accidents. Fixed cameras will trap responsible drivers who may be a little over the fixed limit which is often set unnecessarily low. Fixed cameras do nothing to catch the uninsured, the drunk and the incompetent. There is no substitute for experienced police officers patrolling the roads.
Peter Horton
Maybe those commenting above didn’t notice that the study will look at how this can be financed. i.e it’s not the cash cow some bash on about. Also, no speed cameras won’t stop drink driving or uninsured drivers, but the situation we have at the moment is that those who drive like this are pretty unlikely to be spotted when there are no fixed cameras and so the culture of reckless, aggressive and antisocial driving will continue. This needs to be addressed, we need to make our roads safe and secure.
