Readers’ Letters is a free weekly column giving you the chance to have your say on issues affecting the Harrogate district. It is an opinion column and does not reflect the views of the Stray Ferret. Send your views to letters@thestrayferret.co.uk.
Last week, the Stray Ferret published an article about council plans to charge 50p to access public toilets. Here is what our readers had to say about the proposal.
This is a ridiculous proposal. This is a basic service that should be provided by the council. I use public toilets 3/4 times a day due to my job. What do we pay council tax for? I strongly object to this proposal and will sign any petition. Aren't the council suppose to encourage and help tourism? Rip off Britain.
Marcus Quandt
There is a lack of toilets in Harrogate to start with.
Barbara Rickards
I don’t often agree with Keane but I do on this one. The costs of the toilets is just above that of one NYC Director. Who let the toilets get into disrepair anyway?
Robert Trantor
Well done. Another nail in the coffin of the high street. Mothers with children and well people with a sudden need punished. The public loos in York are few and far between and retailers with toilets already complain they are supposed to subsidise the council by providing much needed facilities. But hey, go ahead. Impose a charge and close toilets. It’s not as if anyone on the council is going to be “caught short”.

This letter was sent in response to a reader’s thoughts on Reform UK in last week’s Readers’ Letters edition.
If David Ingham is so certain that Reform is on the way to becoming a spent force, why did he spend so much time and (obviously considerable) effort in criticising and denigrating the party?
Surely he should just calm down and allow nature to take its course?
Unless he is worried that Reform may actually succeed in its endeavours, of course?
Colin Harrison, Harrogate
