Readers’ Letters is a free weekly column giving you the chance to have your say on issues affecting the Harrogate district. It is an opinion column and does not reflect the views of the Stray Ferret. Send your views to letters@thestrayferret.co.uk.
The following letter was sent in response to council plans to consult on taxi fares amid the outbreak of the Iran war.
I do not believe the proposed increase goes far enough in assisting drivers going through the current financial difficulties that the Iran war is causing in the escalating fuel prices, but added to that, the current situation on increasing insurance premiums, high cost of living, and escalating maintenance labour charges.
Then throw into the pot the council's new policy on vehicle licensing, and the cost in having to have a Wav, Electric, or Hybrid vehicle.
I propose that tariffs 2 and 3 are brought into line with the equivalent of time and a half and double time of tariff one, to also persuade drivers to work nights and unsocial bank holidays, where it is sadly lacking at the moment. And an increase of 20p on tariff 1 flag fall, and pro rata for tariffs 2 and 3. We then may go somewhere near to having a viable business once again.
Richard Fieldman, Ripon
