Readers’ Letters is a free weekly column giving you the chance to have your say on issues affecting the Harrogate district. It is an opinion column and does not reflect the views of the Stray Ferret. Send your views to letters@thestrayferret.co.uk.
The following comments were left by Stray Ferret subscribers on an article about pay-on-arrival parking hitting traders. You can read the story here.
The question must be asked who knows what is best for Harrogate’s businesses. Martin Mann whose family have lived and worked in Harrogate for probably a century or Karl Battersby who doesn’t even live in North Yorkshire?
William Woods
Typical Harrogate. Let’s make the residents pay as much as possible, they can afford it.
Katherin MacCuish
Totally agree Mr Mann’s comments. I had to pay and park recently and was constantly clock watching to check my parking hadn’t expired. And I don’t want another app on my phone.
David Owen
Readers also had their say on an article about a cycling blogger claiming the new Harrogate Tesco is too dangerous for cyclists nearby to visit.
The road modifications required to accommodate the new Tesco were a missed opportunity to address the lack of infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists in the New Park area. Over 13,000 vehicles per day travel on both Skipton Road and Ripon Road in this area (prior to the opening of Tesco). The first controlled pedestrian crossing after the New Park roundabout is over half a mile down Skipton Road (a one mile round trip) and over a mile down Ripon Road. There is also no provision for cyclists to safely cross the New Park roundabout. Planners should try walking and cycling in an area before approving any new development. Developers should be made to pay upfront for infrastructure that promotes safe active travel.
