Readers' Letters: Why can't Harrogate's tempietto go to the Valley Gardens or Starbeck?

We had a lot of reaction to our article about Harrogate’s tempietto being demolished and taken to the tip. Here is a selection of readers comments which were posted on the story.

Why don’t they just move it to Valley Gardens. Plenty of room and enhances the gardens?

How dare they. Why can’t it go somewhere on the Stray or Valley Gardens?

It was a agreed with Matthew Roberts, Economy & Transport Officer with HBC that the council would seriously consider moving the tempietto to Starbeck. I made it very clear at the time that Starbeck (the true gateway to Harrogate) has been neglected for decades by Harrogate. We brought Harrogate the Spa waters, and the railways, it is time we got something positive back. It would look fantastic in the centre of Prospect Park. It should be a celebration of the growing prosperity of Starbeck. It would also match up nicely with the rejuvenation of the long neglected Harper's building further up Starbeck High Street.

Yes, it would cost money to move and rebuild it but that would represent less than 0.5% of the cost of the unwanted Harrogate Gateway. Come on Harrogate based county councillors, bring the tempietto to Starbeck, we deserve it. It is time to remind the region that we exist for more than a traffic jam for Harrogate.

Don’t spend more money on cycling routes, spend it on potholes

This letter is in response to council plans for three major new cycling projects, which you can read about here.

Surely not more ridiculously expensive cycle route projects. Does anyone ever survey the use of the Otley Road scheme? I doubt it. Spend the money making the roads free of potholes, especially in the area of the roads used by cyclists.
