Redundancies at Henshaws after 'reorganisation'
Henshaws has made nine staff redundant at its specialist college on Bogs Lane in Harrogate following a reorganisation.
The charity supports people with sight loss and other disabilities.
Besides its college, which offers day and residential places for students aged 16 to 25, it runs an arts and craft centre in Knaresborough.
A source alerted the Stray Ferret to job losses. They said a clinical team of nurses was among those made redundant after being told they had to be re-interviewed for their jobs.
We were also told staff in the care and education teams had also been affected.
We put this to Henshaws and asked how many staff had been laid off and why, and how the process had been handled.
Henshaws responded with a statement yesterday, which said:
Henshaws Specialist College has undergone a re-organisation in preparation for the new intake of students in the next academic year. We’re all aware that there is pressure on local authority funding, and it is important that Henshaw’s is as efficient as we can be.
The extensive consultation included clinical, care, therapy, and educational teams, as there were changes to staffing structures and roles in all those teams. We have been able to successfully redeploy most employees, however nine people (less than 5%) from across those teams were made redundant.

According to latest financial results filed with the Charity Commission, Henshaws generated income of £12.23 million in the financial year ending August 31, 2023 and incurred expenditure of £11.42 million.
A total of £9.91 million of its income was from government contracts.
