The semi-derelict site has been vacant for many years.

The long-awaited redevelopment of a semi-derelict site in Ripon has moved a stage closer with the submission of a planning application.

The former Express petrol station and convenience store on Skellbank, has been empty for more than 20 years, but is set for a major upgrade, if plans for a residential development are approved by North Yorkshire Council.

Redevelopment would involve demolition of the former petrol station and construction of seven self-contained residential apartments with associated parking

The site, owned by Tate Fuel Oils Limited, is located in a largely residential area of the city, on the route to Fountains Abbey and diagonally across the road from Hugh Ripley Hall, named in honour of Ripon’s first mayor.

Councillor Andrew Williams, the leader of Ripon City Council, told the Stray Ferret:

City council members have wanted to see this site in its sensitive location, coming back into active use after being vacant for many years and I'm pleased to see that plans have come forward, following constructive discussions that I held with the site owner.
