Ripon’s business improvement district (BID) will take the same form it currently has if it is renewed for another five years, according to a report published on North Yorkshire Council’s website.

The BID’s current term, which started in 2021, is due to come to an end next summer, so businesses in the city will be balloted early next year to see if they want to extend it for another five-year term, ending in 2031.

The report sets out the main details of the BID proposal, which remain unchanged from the current model.

The geographical area covered by the district would remain the same, extending in a triangular shape, with the city of Ripon at its core, North Stainley in the north, Skelton-on-Ure in the east and Grantley in the west.

The levy – the amount businesses have pay toward the BID – would remain at 2% of their ratable value, with those falling under the £5,000 threshold still exempt.

The BID currently aims to deliver activity through three objectives – Local & Visitor Marketing, Access & Facilities, and Business Support – and these would also remain unchanged.

Ripon BID was set up in 2021, when 70 of 87 businesses voted in favour of it. Knaresborough businesses rejected the idea in 2021, but Harrogate businesses are keener on the idea, voting for a second BID term last year.

The ballot on whether or not to extend Ripon BID for another term is due to be held between February 13 and March 12 , and the result will be announced shortly after the vote closes.

If approved, the BID’s new term of the BID would start on September 1, 2026.
