Ripon City Council’s next meeting is to be relocated due to an expected large turnout from members of the public.

The meeting, at which councillors will discuss the revised Ripon Cathedral annexe proposals, was due to take place on December 9 at the council chamber in the town hall.

But the council has decided to relocate the meeting, which will start at 6pm, to Holy Trinity Church on Kirkby Road due to the town hall's limited capacity.

The city council will not determine whether the application can proceed. But its views will be considered by North Yorkshire Council when it adjudicates on the proposal early next year.

The council said in a statement on social media today:

The meeting of Ripon City Council due to be held on 9th December 2024 will include the parish council’s review and decision on the revised Ripon Cathedral planning application.

The meeting venue will be moved to Holy Trinity Church, Kirkby Road, Ripon due to the limited capacity of the council chamber, town hall.

The cathedral submitted plans for a two-storey annexe on Minster Gardens in 2022. The building, which it is estimated would cost £8 million, would include a cathedral choir school, cafe, toilets and disabled access.

But the plans proved controversial, particularly the loss of trees, and the cathedral paused the application in January for further consultation before publishing its revised plans this month.

Currently, North Yorkshire Council has received 195 expressions of support for the scheme and 141 objections.
