Ripon firm lands £2.4 million North Yorkshire gritting contract
North Yorkshire Council’s highways company has awarded a £2.4 million contract for gritters in the county.
NY Highways, which is owned by the council, procured the vehicles to tackle treacherous roads during the winter and to replace some of its fleet.
The company awarded the contract to Ripon-based Econ Engineering, which will supply 11 gritters, a hook lift and a permanent mounted tipper vehicle.
The contract is expected to last seven years and will see NY Highways lease the vehicles at a cost of £346,924.76 per year — meaning the contract is valued at a total of £2,428,473.32.
A report due before the council’s shareholder committee on September 8 said:
The primary aim of the procurement was to ensure that NY Highways had access to reliable and fit-for-purpose vehicles, essential for maintaining North Yorkshire’s roads efficiently and safely.
Specific objectives included replacing outdated vehicles to maintain operational capacity, ensuring the fleet meets environmental and regulatory standards, and optimising vehicle availability and reliability for critical maintenance tasks.
The report added that the company preferred to lease the vehicles “from both a budget and operational perspective”.
The council, which has an annual gritting budget of £8.3 million, covers a network of 4,400km of road with 70 gritters, 107 farming contractors and several snowblowers.
According to the authority, it has 50,000 tonnes of salt stored in its barns and there are 5,000 salt heaps and bins around the county.
