The owners of the Ripon Inn have submitted a planning application to erect a tipi in the gardens of the Edwardian hotel.
The three-storey hotel, which opened in 1909, was acquired by the Inn Collection Group in June 2021 and reopened in October 2023.
The Inn Collection Group has now applied to North Yorkshire Council for permission to put a tipi in the beer garden at the back of the building on Park Street.
A planning and heritage statement, compiled in support of the application, said:
The introduction of the tipi is an important addition for The Ripon Inn, allowing guests to make use of the outdoor space throughout the colder and darker months of the year. It will provide additional flexible seating, dining, and event space, supporting the hotel’s continued vitality and contribution to the local visitor economy while maintaining the heritage of the wider area.
The Ripon Inn, which has 58 bedrooms, is not a listed building but it is in Ripon Conservation Area.
The planning and heritage statement says the tipi would have “no adverse impacts on heritage assets, residential amenity or biodiversity” and would yield economic benefits to the business and city.
It adds:
“The tipi would be a freestanding structure, designed for flexible use as a sheltered space for outdoor dining. It would be installed on a timber deck constructed from traditional timber poles and a high-quality canvas canopy in neutral tones, designed to be visually recessive and sympathetic to the surrounding garden environment.”
The council will decide whether to approve the application.
