Ripon mayor Jackie Crozier faces a vote of no confidence at an extraordinary meeting of the city council on Monday.
The meeting was called following this week’s resignation of leader Andrew Williams and deputy leader Peter Horton.
Cllr Williams attributed his decision to medical reasons, but it came amid a challenge to his authority by a rival group of councillors who want to get rid of the leader and deputy leader roles.
The group was told it had submitted its bid too late for the meeting, but the issue is on the agenda for Monday’s meeting — along with the vote of no confidence in Cllr Crozier.
Cllrs Crozier and Williams are believed to be political allies on the increasingly divided council, but the agenda does not give a reason for a vote of no confidence.
Cllr Crozier, who is managing director of Little Bird Markets, this year became only the fifth woman in 421 years to be elected as mayor of Ripon.
Another agenda item calls for the scheme of delegation, which allows individual councillors to make decisions, to be revoked.
There is also an item calling for the current membership of the staffing committee, with the exception of the chair, to be dissolved and for new members to be elected.
Cllr Pauline McHardy, who is in favour of ending the leader and deputy leader roles, told the Stray Ferret she supported the proposals but declined to comment further. “It will all come out at the meeting,” she said.
We have contacted Cllr Crozier for comment.
The meeting will take place in the town hall at 6pm.
