A parish poll is to held asking Ripon residents if they have confidence in mayor, Councillor Barbara Brodigan.
The poll was triggered at a parish meeting when 13 residents called for a poll, surpassing the required number of 10.
The cost of the poll, which is not legally binding, will be added to council tax bills. The sum is expected to be between £5,000 and £7,000.
Ripon City Council sought legal advice on whether to hold a poll after a parish meeting voted 61-31 against the idea.
But locum clerk Adam Chugg confirmed today (November 15) a poll would take place.
He said:
It has taken a little time but the solicitors at the advisory team at the National Association of Local Councils [our national body] have now confirmed that a parish poll was triggered at the parish meeting of November 3.
The mayor has therefore emailed the elections team at North Yorkshire Council as follows:
‘I am writing to inform you that a Parish Poll has been triggered by 10 electors of Ripon City Parish. The question for the poll is “Do you have confidence in Cllr Barbara Brodigan?’
Electors and those who claimed the poll should be aware that the question of no confidence will not legally force or bind the mayor to resign.
I trust this information confirms the next steps and that the elections team at North Yorkshire Council are now taking forward the organisation of the parish poll, with the costs borne by Ripon City Council.
