A new 'wellbeing' running group is being set up in Ripon, aimed at people who are new to running or looking to get back into exercise after a break.
Mental health charity Mind in Harrogate District is behind the initiative, which seeks to make running feel accessible rather than intimidating, and to give people an opportunity to get outdoors, meet others and support their wellbeing.
The 12-session programme will be delivered in partnership with Active North Yorkshire and led by a qualified coach. The first session will take place on September 17.
Sessions will start gently, combining walking with slow jogging and gradually building up. There is no expectation that people joining the group will already be able to run, and participants will be encouraged to progress at a pace that feels comfortable for them.
Mind in Harrogate District ran a similar programme in Harrogate this year, which it says was well received by participants, and the charity is now bringing the initiative to Ripon.
Kirsty Dawson, rural wellbeing coordinator at Mind in Harrogate District, said:
We know that starting exercise can sometimes feel like the hardest part, particularly if you haven’t done it for a while or don’t see yourself as a runner.
This group really isn’t about how fast or how far you can run. Our Harrogate group showed us how valuable it can be to bring people together in a relaxed environment where they can get moving, meet other people and build their confidence. We’re really pleased to now be able to offer the same opportunity in Ripon.
The first session will take place between 10.30am and 11.30am on Thursday September 17 at the Jack Laugher Leisure & Wellness Centre in Ripon.
Places on the Beginners Wellbeing Running Group are free, but booking is required. To reserve a place, email office@mindinharrogate.org.uk or call 01423 503335.
