Tomorrow night's New Year's Eve party and fireworks display planned for Ripon Market Square. have been cancelled because of forecast heavy rain and high winds.

The free to attend annual event, which has been staged by Ripon City Council since 1986 and paid for from the parish precept, traditionally draws the biggest gathering of the year in the city centre.

But city council leader Andrew Williams told the Stray Ferret:

Public safety is our principal consideration for every public event that we organise throughout the year and after discussion with fellow councillors and our chief officer, we have regrettably decided to cancel the New Year's Eve concert and fireworks display.

Looking at the current forecasts for Tuesday, featuring heavy rain and high winds, we felt it necessary to er on the side of caution.

We know that residents and people who have joined in Ripon's night of revelry for many years, will be as disappointed as we are, following months of meticulous planning, but we will, weather permitting, resume the party in 2025.
