Road closures and route: A guide to the Tour of Britain in North Yorkshire
Thousands of cyclists are set to hit the roads of North Yorkshire next weekend as the Tour of Britain comes to the region.
This year’s event, on Saturday, September 5, will see many of the world’s best cyclists race through Ripon, Boroughbridge and Pateley Bridge.
It comes after York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority agreed to pay British Cycling £200,000 to host a stage of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men this year and in 2027.
It is expected to give the Harrogate district its biggest tourism boost from cycling since the 2014 Tour de France and the 2019 UCI Road World Championships.
Ahead of the big day, here is all you need to know about the Tour of Britain, including the route and road closures.
The route
North Yorkshire will be included in stage four of the Tour of Britain.
The stage includes four days of racing, starting in Lincoln, followed by Boston to Skegness, Hull to Beverley and Helmsley to Leyburn.
The final day, on Saturday, September 5 — described by organisers as the hardest — will cover 170.5 km with 2,459m of ascent for the hardest stage of the 2026 Tour.

Starting in Helmsley, the race will head through Easingwold, Boroughbridge, and Ripon before entering the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Riders will then take on the notorious Greenhow bank climb out of Pateley Bridge before the peloton heads to Grassington, and towards Leyburn.
Road closures
As a result of the race, North Yorkshire Council is set to put in place a number of fixed and rolling road closures.
Parking restrictions may also be in place on the route.
In Boroughbridge, a temporary closure will be in place between 11.30am and 12.30pm as riders pass through the town.
From there, the route will take cyclists through Ripon Racecourse and Studley Road in Ripon where closures will be in place between 11.40am and 12.40pm.
In Pateley Bridge, the road will be closed between 12.10pm and 1.10pm.
Finally, a road closure will be in place at Greenhow Hill from 11am until 2pm.
Timings
For those looking to get a spot on the roadside to catch a glimpse of the Tour of Britain, there are also estimated timings for the riders coming through the Harrogate district.
