Motorists in Knaresborough were caught in tailbacks caused by new roadworks that sprang up this morning – the day before the new school term starts.
The roadworks on Chain Lane, which include temporary traffic lights, are scheduled to be in place from today until Monday, September 15, according to Yorkshire Water’s note on the One Network interactive map, which shows all roadwork schemes across the UK.
A spokesperson for Yorkshire Water told the Stray Ferret:
The work being carried out on Chain Lane is the final stage of a £1m project to lay new water mains in Knaresborough.
The new water mains, which will improve the service provided in the area as well as reducing bursts and leaks, are expected to be in operation in the next two weeks.
We apologise for any inconvenience while carrying out this work.
The roadworks are close to the Forest School, Aspin Park Academy and King James's School.
After a summer of roadworks across the district, North Yorkshire Council and the utility companies have been trying to complete schemes ahead of the return to school and postpone others so as not to hinder motorists at the start of the new term.
But Yorkshire Water’s mains replacement project is seen as particularly urgent to prevent leaks at a time when the prolonged drought has left reservoir water stocks at less than a third their usual level for the time of year.
