Seven police officers in North Yorkshire are currently under investigation for violence against women and girls, it has emerged.

Police violence against females has featured strongly in the news in the last couple of days after the death of Alan Greer, a constable in Scotland who took his life in May — a month after he was arrested on suspicion of rape.

A BBC investigation discovered Greer was a violent rapist who also carried out attempted murders of women over at least 14 years. His case has been dubbed “Police Scotland’s Wayne Couzens moment”.

A freedom of information to North Yorkshire Police asked how many serving police officers had been arrested for rape, sexual assault and other offences relating to violence against women and girls since March 2021.

The response listed 12 cases. Five led to dismissal, three were found to have no case to answer, two would have been dismissed, one received a written warning and one retired due to ill health.

    The response added:

"Further to the above I can confirm that an additional seven officers are currently under investigation for relevant offences.”

The force declined to give further details, saying in its response:

I will not be disclosing specific information relating to ongoing investigations including information relating to the allegation being investigated. Although disclosure would adhere to the basic principle of being open and transparent, I consider that, when weighed against the risk of prejudicing the efficient running of an investigation, the factors favouring non-disclosure take precedence.

North Yorkshire Police employed 1,649 officers in 2025 — fewer than the 1,684 figure the previous year but considerably up on 1,363 in 2019.
