A village school near Ripon has been given an upgrade following an Ofsted inspection.

Sharow Church of England Primary School was told it required improvement following an inspection in February 2024.

But the school was rated ‘good’ in all five categories — quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision — following its latest inspection in May this year.

Government inspectors said in a report published this week that the curriculum had developed strongly, staff had high expectations for pupils’ learning and behaviour, and that pupils engaged well in lessons.

The report further praised staff and governors, saying that they were “deeply committed to the school’s work”.

Headteacher Jacqui Palmer said:

We are delighted with the outcome of our recent Ofsted inspection.

It reflects the dedication of our staff, the enthusiasm of our pupils, and the support of our families and governors.

We are committed to continuing our journey of improvement and ensuring every child at Sharow Church of England Primary School flourishes.

The school currently has 85 pupils on its roll.

Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) were seen to be well supported. Inspectors said staff have a clear understanding of these pupils’ needs.

The school was further praised for its opportunities to learn about different cultures and backgrounds.

Chair of governors, Michael Paul, said:

This report simply confirms what the governing board has been seeing for the past few years – excellent progress in the quality of education the children are receiving.

The education and experiences children receive at Sharow will stay with them into secondary school and beyond.

I would like to thank Mrs Palmer and all the staff for the amount of work, dedication and expertise they have shown.

This judgement is down to them, and I know they have ambitions to take the school even further.
