A queue of people waited eagerly for The Range to open.

Crowds flocked to the latest addition to Harrogate’s retail sector this morning (March 28).

The Range, which has taken over the former Homebase store at Plumpton Park, officially opened its doors at 9am.

The Stray Ferret arrived shortly before then to see a long queue had already formed nearing the doors of neighbouring Morrisons.

Liberal Democrat councillor and deputy charter mayor, Philip Broadbank, led a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the occasion.

Once inside, shoppers received a warm welcome from staff in a store with a similar layout to the former Homebase. Dogs on leads are welcome.

The store is huge and stocks – as the name suggests – a wide range of products. From homeware and garden furniture to toys and crafting equipment, there is little the store lacks.

Garden Centre by Homebase, the newly branded garden centre section of The Range, was also unveiled at today’s opening.

Green-fingered visitors can find a range of flowers, shrubs, garden features and tools.

A spin-the-wheel was on offer at the store this morning, giving lucky shoppers the opportunity to win The Range gift cards.

Alex Simpkin, chief executive of CDS Superstores, said today:

We’re excited to have opened our new-format store in Harrogate and see so many locals and visitors join us for the grand opening.

The addition of the Garden Centre by Homebase allows us to offer a complete shopping experience for customers, from stylish homeware to quality outdoor living solutions, all in one place. The team can’t wait to serve the Harrogate community with great value products.

Homebase entered administration on November 14 last year, but CDS Superstores – which owns The Range and Wilko – acquired its name, intellectual property and 70 stores.

The Range’s first store opened under the name CDS in 1989. It now boasts more than 210 stores across the UK and Ireland.
