Silson Contemporary is not an ordinary art gallery. It is something of a hidden gem.

This unique gallery is found in the Harrogate home of its curator, Sarah Collier. Sarah's living room, dining room, large hallway and stairwells over three floors, display contemporary art, ceramics and sculpture. The experience of stepping into a large, beautiful Edwardian home to see art transforms the experience for visitors. It provides an intimate setting where you can see original art as it might look in a home, not in a high street gallery.

Silson Contemporary’s reputation is well known across the UK and further afield with contemporary art lovers– but Sarah's Harrogate home gallery is less well known locally.

If you are passionate about original, contemporary art from well-known or aspiring artists you need to visit Silson Contemporary.

Sarah says:

When you visit you're not walking into someone's home and intruding on everyday family life - it is a professional gallery, it just happens to be in my home!

Being in a home setting is welcoming, non-intimidating, and helps visitors really envisage how art could look in their own home. And if they love how it looks in my home, they can imagine how fabulous it could look in their own.

Sarah has always had a love of art. Whilst working in Harrogate, she studied Art History at the Open University and graduated in 2014. The idea of opening her own gallery grew and in 2016 Silson opened.

Sarah gives advice to clients on how to hang the art in their homes and decide what to hang alongside it. Her knowledge and passion for the art and artists helps guide visitors and introduce them to artists they may have never heard of.

As the gallery has gained in reputation, many artists submit to be part of it. However Sarah is very selective:

The art I choose ultimately has to be art I would buy and hang in my own home. Artists who grab my attention, who show integrity, great skill, and a desire to evolve in their practice.

My taste is eclectic, but if art stops me in my tracks, and makes me want to know more about it and the artist, then that is the art I want in the gallery.

That is the art that inspires me. It has to be art I will never tire of. Timeless contemporary art, no trends!

Sarah has developed a gallery that is like no other in this area.  Silson Contemporary is a place to be inspired. Sarah's ability to choose  artists, her unique vision for her gallery and the space where she displays the art,  provides an experience you cannot find elsewhere. This is what has earned her many loyal clients, who trust her and her art choices.

The gallery can be found at 17 Harlow Oval, Harrogate, HG2 0DS. silsoncontemporaryart.co.uk

It can be visited on Open Days or opened daily by appointment.  Exhibitions run on the ground floor throughout the year with all gallery artists' work available to view in the upper gallery spaces.

The next show, Life in Abstract, featuring painters, Boo Compton and Carrie Jean Goldsmith, starts on Sunday 10th May.

If you would like to receive an invitation to the preview on Saturday 9th May, please contact Sarah here.
